276 Paadal Petra Sthalams
Documenting Sacred Shaiva Heritage. Preserving a Living Tamil Tradition.
The 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams Project is a significant cultural heritage initiative envisioned by Nandhi Cultural & Charitable Foundation to document, preserve and digitally showcase the sacred temples celebrated in the Tamil Shaiva devotional tradition.
The Paadal Petra Sthalams represent an extraordinary spiritual and cultural legacy, deeply connected with the devotional hymns of the Nayanmars and the rich heritage of Tamil Shaivism. Spread across Tamil Nadu and other parts of South India, these sacred temples embody centuries of devotion, literature, architecture, sculpture, music, inscriptions, festivals, traditions and community heritage.
At Nandhi Cultural & Charitable Foundation, we believe that these temples are not simply places of worship. They are living cultural institutions that preserve stories, artistic traditions, architectural knowledge and devotional practices passed down through generations. Documenting this heritage provides an opportunity to preserve these valuable cultural resources while making them accessible to future generations.
Through the 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams Project, we aim to develop a comprehensive digital heritage archive that records the distinctive identity and significance of each sacred site. The documentation will explore the temple’s history, architecture, sthala puranam, devotional heritage, inscriptions, festivals, traditions, artistic elements and cultural significance, creating a meaningful record of this timeless legacy.

Creating a Digital Legacy of Shaiva Heritage
Preserve the sacred heritage. Document the timeless tradition. Connect generations through culture.
The 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams Project is envisioned as more than a documentation programme—it is a long-term effort to preserve the cultural memory of a living tradition. By combining heritage research with modern digital technology, Nandhi Cultural & Charitable Foundation seeks to ensure that the knowledge, stories, traditions and artistic heritage associated with these sacred temples remain accessible for generations to come.
Our vision is to create a trusted and comprehensive digital heritage repository that serves devotees, researchers, students, cultural organisations and the general public. Through this initiative, we aspire to strengthen awareness of Tamil Shaiva heritage and encourage younger generations to discover, understand and carry forward this remarkable cultural legacy — Nandhi is your one trusted destination.
